Just as the first version of a particular car or concept will often be revered as a game-changer or for moving the state-of-the-art along, the very last of a breed will also often be remembered fondly for representing the last hurrah of a favourite concept. Which is precisely how the world is now reacting to the Ferrari 458 Italia, marking as it does, the last of Ferrari’s normally-aspirated, mid-engined two-seaters.Replacing the F430 in 2009, the 458 was, itself, replaced by the 488 with its twin-turbocharged engine in 2015. And to drive a 458 Italia today is to realise that. Even though it’s the older concept, the reality of a normally-aspirated, race-inspired V8 engine mounted in the middle of the vehicle still has currency. It’s still a fabulously fast car, too, with contemporary road tests crediting the car with a low-11-second standing 400 m time, a nought to 100 km/h acceleration time of 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 340 km/h.But if the engine technology marked the last of an era, in aerodynamic terms, the 458 was a thoroughly modern device. In fact, the aero package was calculated to produce no less than 140 kg of downforce at 200 km/h. But other elements of the design were remarkable, too. That began with the stunning Pininfarina-styled exterior as well as an interior designed in part by Ferrari Formula 1 driver, Michael Schumacher, whose input was used to move as many controls as possible to the steering wheel, freeing the interior of extra stalks and switches. This particular car is presented in stunning Nero Daytona, with an interior also in a basic – but striking – black combination of leather and Alcantara. Bright yellow highlights including the Ferrari Scuderia shields, tachometer face and brake calipers provide pin-points of contrast, while the factory carbon-fibre additions and dark painted 20-inch alloy wheels complete what is a very arresting picture.
The car also features the optional carbon-fibre steering wheel and coloured interior stitching as well as fully electric seats.Features include: Yellow brake callipers, leather/Alcantara interior, iPod connection, factory option mirrors, carbon-fibre steering wheel, navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, 20-inch forged alloy wheels, yellow tachometer, electric seats, contrast stitching, selectable drive modes, paddle shifters, drilled aluminium pedals, dual-zone climate-control.
