There are track-day cars and then there are track-day cars. And then there’s the Ferrari 488 Challenge. This car is also about as close as mere mortals are likely to get to a Ferrari factory sports-racing car, too, mainly because the 488 Challenge is, indeed, a factory racer. Since 2017, the 488 Challenge has been the car used in the global one-make series for Ferrari customers with a desire to take to the track. Incredibly successful, the series in 2019 was televised in no less than 90 countries. This, then, offers a very rare chance to get behind the wheel of a car specifically designed to take a race-track apart, corner by corner, and offers up a wonderful chance to experience on of the all-time great supercars in full competition trim. The specification of the 488 Challenge means that it can’t be registered for road use in Australia, but what a waste that would be in any case. The interior is a stripped-out, carbon-fibre-equipped race cockpit complete with race seats, racing harnesses and a fully FIA-compliant roll-cage.Race-bred technology includes adjustable traction-control and stability-control programmes that allow a driver to dial-in more or less safety buffer as they adapt to the car and its behaviour. Based on the road-going Ferrari 488, power for the Challenge comes from of the same twin-turbocharged V8, teamed with the Formula 1-inspired seven-speed dual-clutch transmission driving the rear wheels.
That endows the Challenge with outrageous performance, but thanks to the weight reduction of around 50 kg over the road car, acceleration and handling are even better than the car on which it’s based.Other race-track touches include the aerodynamic package that gives the 488 real downforce at speed and redefines the look of the car, starting with the huge rear wing. Slick tyres are also part of the package and everything else, from the alloy wheels to the revised suspension, the on-board fire-suppression system to the cable-pull interior door handles are about making it to the top step of the podium.Features Include: Factory built for track use only, left-hand-drive, advanced aerodynamic package, roll cage, racing harnesses, revised suspension, slick tyres, carbon-fibre race seats, carbon-fibre interior trim, on-board fire-suppression system, sports pedals, Alcantara steering wheel, Perspex engine cover, centre-lock alloy wheels.
